How to Test an AI Face Swap Tool in 30 Minutes
Why most comparisons are useless
People test three tools with three different clips and three different photos, then rank the results. That ranks the input media, not the tools. A tool that looks excellent on a well-lit head-on talking clip can fall apart on a head turn, and you will not find out until you run the same hard clip through all of them.
The fix is a test kit: one set of clips and one source photo that you run through every tool, in the same order, scored on the same points.
Build a test kit once
Spend ten minutes assembling this and you can evaluate any tool in about five.
- A 5-second head-on clip, evenly lit, face visible throughout. Your baseline — every tool should pass this.
- A 5-second clip with a head turn past roughly 45 degrees. This is where face attachment usually fails.
- A 5-second clip with partial occlusion — a hand crossing the face, hair over a cheek, or a microphone in frame.
- One source photo reused for every test: front-facing, even light, no sunglasses, no heavy filter, at least 600px across the face.
- A note of your real constraints: typical clip length, where you publish, and the most a finished project can cost.
Keep the exact same files on disk. Do not re-export between tools — small re-encodes change the result.
Score each tool on the same seven points
Run the three clips in order and write down a score from 1 to 5 for each point. Do it immediately, while the previous tool is still fresh in your mind.
- Baseline quality — is the head-on clip clean, with no visible seam at the jaw or hairline?
- Head-turn stability — does the face stay attached and proportionate, or slide and smear?
- Occlusion handling — when an object crosses the face, does the mask recover cleanly?
- Skin-tone continuity — does the applied face shift with scene lighting, or stay flat?
- Frame-to-frame stability — scrub through for flicker, jitter, or identity drift.
- Output controls — can you get the resolution you need, and is the export watermark-free?
- Cost of your real clip — not the headline price, but what your actual 30-second job costs in credits.
Weight the points to your own work. A tool that wins four of seven but fails head turns is the wrong tool if your footage is mostly head turns.
Read the price the way you will actually pay
A low entry pack tells you nothing about a finished project. Before committing, find out four things.
- What one second of output costs, including any HD or priority multiplier.
- Whether failed or retried jobs consume credits. Some providers refund automatically, some do not.
- Whether credits expire. Monthly expiry is the difference between a $15 pack and a rolling annual cost.
- Whether a subscription is required to reach the quality tier you just tested.
